During my forty-one year’s job with Pakistan International Airlines I worked voluntarily for about eight years as part-time Field Engineer Canon Pakistan to help out my friend who lost his home, his whole life earnings and entrepreneurship of Ex. Lever Brothers East Pakistan (present Unilever Bangladesh). He and his spouse landed at Karachi airport in 1971 with just the dress on their bodies and a pillow in his hand. The pillow was almost torn out by Custom Security to check for any objectionable substance. When asked, why he is holding that pillow, he explained that he can live without anything but cannot sleep without a pillow. Just few days later he borrowed some money and caught hold of agency for Canon West Pakistan. After working hours of airline I used to repair calculators and photocopiers in my 4×6 feet workshop set up by my friend. Occasionally I had to fly on weekends to other cities of Pakistan to attend the complaints of customers with prior permission from airline. A fine morning I received phone call from this friend “Get ready to leave for Tokyo with your newly wed as you have been invited by Canon”. Later I came to know that according to annual assessment “Canon Pakistan” has attained second position in after sales service throughout Far East (including New Zealand), South Asia and Middle East.

As I landed at Tokyo Haneda Airport with my spouse, I was amazed to look at the VIP treatment right from the doorstep of airplane, forty days stay at five-star hotels, a splendid recreation tour to Northern Japan and back to the door of plane departed to Karachi. During our stay a three days Convention was held at Canon Head office Tokyo. All the entrepreneurs of above mentioned regions were present where I was the only Field Engineer added just because of being top three best performers. My wife was especially invited as I was married just five months ago. Pakistan’s Flag was there on my table during conference and I was awarded with a gold-plated souvenir in a huge ceremony organized by Canon Calculator & Copier Division.

That was the moment I learned two lessons:

  1. A volunteer job definitely pays us off in some kind of uncountable worth.
  2. Value of team and their families sharing work is one of the top priorities for an Entrepreneur.

Wonder is Extra Ordinary Beauty of Creator

At Grand Canyon0002 (At Grand Canyon 1989)

A weekend trip from Phoenix to Sedona and Grand Canyon during summer was not very hectic. Most of the time we were involved in paper route map as there was no GPS navigation at that time. The choice was of mine as when I watched David Copperfield (Magician/Illusionist) crossing the nine mile wide canyon in a sitting yoga style up in the air, it looked too beautiful on television. I wanted to re-enjoy those scenes just being over that point. I did enjoy but raised a question to people then and there “Does it look beautiful or horribly wonderful?” Almost every one present there from around the globe responded “Oh my god, it is scary to look one mile down but it is wonderful to look around”.

Extra ordinary beauty that wonders us is called wonderful beauty or simply “Wonder” like Taj Mahal, one of the Wonders of the World.

My father’s job as Head of Archeological and Tourism Department UP-India was to explain the history of Mogul’s architecture to the dignitaries from all over the world. He told me that none of them said Taj as wonder but “Beautiful” a spontaneous response.

Beauty may be in someone’s words, deeds or actions. Any extra ordinary phrase said or written by an intellectual can be classified as “Wonderful Quote” just because of its extreme beauty of formation. A person disabled in some accident but after overcoming the trauma and defeat to disability is called a Wonderful Person. Even after cure of cancer, fight to live is called as a wonderful act of that person.

A lover or beloved may not be necessarily beautiful apparently but a wonderful lover or beloved is glued in our heart and brain as his / her beauty is extra ordinary which is gauged through multiple dimensions.

It is not possible to nurture our children harmoniously if they are more than one. A better lifestyle with a little wealthy standard aggravates the disharmony. All the four kids, as of mine, have different mindset with obvious divergent behavior and attitude. My grandmother used to say in her own style “All the five fingers are not equal” and luckily she had five sons too.

I have two sons and two daughters; naturally they too are of different nature. One of my sons is of demanding and commanding nature; the fact came in to my knowledge at 3rd. birthday of his one year younger brother. My brother-in-law arrived a bit late from Islamabad to attend the ceremony in Karachi, for some reasons could not bring the gift, hence asked the celebrity of the day about his choice preference gift. He requested for just a plastic ball hesitantly, but the elder son of mine demanded a remote control toy car for himself as well. I still remember that moment as this demanding and convincing attitude of his persists even today while he is thirty-seven years of age, married and having ten years old daughter. I don’t understand why I can’t reject his demand, proposal or suggestion in any matter right away or even after arguments. He not only has extra ordinary convincing power but his responsive behavior is always so polite that it does not make me angry. He knows the technique and fully concentrates at his will of taking the issue to last stage according to his personal will. Unfortunately he did not apply all these qualities in getting education and remained focused on doing business mostly from my account.

He moved to Chicago after attending eleventh grade, did odd jobs there, attended four semesters of computer science and finally started a restaurant business in partnership of a friend who kicked him out when he returned from hospital after fifteen days.

He stayed in hospital to take care of her mother who went through a surgery but couldn’t survive. I called him back and invested a hell of an amount to build and run a five-star restaurant in a posh area of Karachi.

Just after two years the whole business was taken over by gangsters on gun point and we were on the road fighting for bread and butter to survive as I was retired within a year from my permanent job of Pakistan International Airlines after serving as Maintenance Manager for 41 years.

All above happenings shattered all of us while my son, the true story is about, suffered a nervous breakdown, diagnosed as bi-polar patient. Psychiatrist told me that he cannot do any job even after treatment. I studied on internet for months regarding these types of patients, their treatment and about their future. I was too disappointed but made my mission to enable him for living a normal life. Being a single parent, I did his psychotherapy / counseling 24/7/365. My other children helped me extra ordinarily by all means and after eight years, learned a lesson:

” We should try to say NO to our demanding / commanding offsprings very often. Medicine only keeps bipolar patients stable but family members’ counseling helps them to stand up again for making a living as my son has started a mini scale restaurant once again”.
